ビリギャル（学年ビリのギャルが１年で偏差値を４０上げて慶応大学に現役合格した話）の著者 坪田信貴さんがTVに出演していた。そこでのコメントとして次の様なものがあった。
１．机に向かわない子への魔法の言葉
一緒に机に行こう。
一緒に問題を解いて、この問題がここまで出来たらよんでね。
２．とにかくやる気がない
やる気と勉強とどっちが先か。
勉強が先であとからやる気が出てくる。
３．叱り方
間違えても叱らない
その答えは面白い、とかコメントする。
間違いを叱るとチャレンジしない人間になる。
４．ダメな子どもはいない。
ダメな指導者はいる。
実際はこれだけでは成績は上がらないでしょうが、思い当たることは多い。教えているというより一緒に解いていてクイズを一緒に解いて遊んでいる感覚で勉強する子や、私が間違えると面白がって勉強に気持ちが乗ってくる様な子もいます。嫌いだからわからないのではなく、わからないから嫌いな子、できなかったことで叱ることは私はしませんが、なんでわからないのと困ってしまうと子どもが萎縮してしまっている子もいます。
１０年以上も前のTV番組に、夏ぐらいから東大を目指すという企画がありました。東大を目指す人はその時点では小学の算数もできない芸能人です。その人に東大生を家庭教師にして、その芸能人は監禁状態でひたすら勉強をします。毎日、外もでないで、起きてから寝るまで勉強です。結果として、東大はダメでしたが、日大に合格していました。一年を経たない期間で小学算数もできない人が大学に合格しています。その伸びしろはビリギャルより大きいかも知れません。
実際に子どもをみていてこの子はちょっと勉強すればできる様になるのにあ、と思う子や、これでは平均点そこそこかと思いきや、８０点以上とってくる子もいる。その様な子は先週はできなかった問題を次の週にはできる様に自力でやってきている。そこそこできる子とちょっとできない子の違いは、理解力には大きく違いはなさそうではあるが、わからなかったことに対してのしつこさが違っている様な場合が多いです。持って生まれたものはなくても、興味をもって、意欲的に勉強すれば、偏差値４０まではいかなくても、だれでも偏差値１０程度以上は上がることでしょう。
