Plot
Shane, a laconic but skilled gunfighter with a mysterious past,is a drifter who rides into an isolated valley in the sparsely settled Wyoming Territory, sometime after the Civil War. He is hired as a farmhand by local rancher Joe Starrett who lives as a homesteader with his wife, Marian, and their young son, Joey. Starrett tells Shane that a war of intimidation is being waged on the valley's settlers. Though they have claimed their land legally under the Homestead Acts, a ruthless cattle baron, Rufus Ryker, has hired various rogues and henchmen to harass them and force them out of the valley.

今回の作品は1953年のジョージ・スティーヴンス監督作品の「シェーン」です。
アラン・ラッド、ジーン・アーサー、ヴァン・へフリン他出演。
ジーン・アーサーは1936年の「オペラハット」でゲイリー・クーパー、1939年の「スミス都へ行く」でジェームズ・スチュワートの相手役をしたことでも有名。都会のキャリアウーマンのような役柄を得意とした。
この頃はもう映画にはほとんど出演しておらず、「シェーン」はジーン・アーサー最後の映画出演で唯一のカラー作品となりました。
また本作の格闘描写は結構暴力的。監督のスティーヴンスは暴力の恐怖を観客に示したかったようで、この演出は監督の意図するものである。暴力的だ、嫌だという話は全くの的外れ。
西部開拓時代は平気で暴力的なことは行われていた。

予告編に「カムバーーーク」と叫んでるシーン。映画の中でも有名なシーンで、あれはラストシーンなんです。
そこで馬の上に乗っているシェーンはもうすでに死んでいるのではないかという論争。
上の記事の中でも取り上げられています。
個人的な意見だと、あの時点ではまだ生きてるんだと感じました。
死んでる人間が馬にきちんと乗ったままでいられるかは疑問ですから。
原作だと成長したJoeyがシェーンは亡くなったということを聞かされるそうですが。
まあでも確かに記事の通り、生死がそこまで重要かと言われればそうではないんでしょう。
重要なのはシェーンが歴史の中に消えていく存在の象徴として、去ることですから。
