Today’s Doodle celebrates the 85th birthday of Japanese-American author, conceptual artist, and１ trans-humanist architect Shusaku Arakawa. Together with his wife, Arakawa chased a philosophical quest for immortality through experimental paintings, literature, and, at the grandest scale, architectural 2oddities−a concept coined Reversible Destiny.

Shusaku Arakawa was born on this day in 1936 in Nagoya, Japan. His early life was defined by mathematics and medicine studies before he pursued ３surrealist painting at Tokyo’s Musashino Art University. As an early adopter of the international conceptual art movement, he joined similarly minded artists after his 1961 move to New York City. Soon after, Shusako met a poet who became his lifelong artistic collaborator and spouse: Madeline Gins.

In 1963, the couple began the ambitious 4“The Mechanism of Meaning” series−an assemblage of 83 large panel paintings crafted with the aim of investigating the mysteries of human consciousness that required over a decade to5 bring to fruition. Global exhibitions of the masterwork funded the couple’s next lofty endeavor: extending 6life expectancy by fostering a novel relationship with the built world called “procedural architecture.” They 7hypothesized that engaging residents with challenging interior designs, such as steep and uneven floor plans, would boost 8immunity and fight aging by promoting an active and thoughtful relationship with one’s surroundings. Their first residential works of procedural architecture can be found at Reversible Destiny Lofts, a complex in Tokyo and the inspiration for today’s Doodle artwork.

Arakawa and Gins devoted their lives to designing an architectural fountain of youth and founded multiple institutions to advance this project, including the Reversible Destiny Foundation. Today, several installations of their eccentric architecture remain open to the public, such as the Reversible Destiny Lofts. This renown project comprises a brightly colored residential complex in Tokyo that served as the couple’s first work of procedural architecture, which they dedicated to Helen Keller.

日本ハム元監督 大島康徳さん がんで死去 70歳 通算2204安打

プロ野球の中日と日本ハムで強打者として通算2000本安打を達成し、日本ハムでは監督も務めた大島康徳さんが大腸がんのため、先月30日に亡くなりました。70歳でした。

一発長打の大島君。



ところで日本人の死因の1位はがん(悪性新生物)、2位心疾患、3位が老衰となっています。

日本でも大腸がんは増えています。
大腸がんのリスクは年齢によって増加。
大腸がんは早期発見ならば、完全治癒の可能性が高い。
だが初期の頃は症状がほぼなく、症状が出ているときは既に進行しているということ。
当然のことながら検診を定期的に受けるのが一番でしょう。

Today’s Doodle, illustrated by Baltimore-based guest artist Ashanti Fortson, celebrates the 122nd birthday of １Jewish, German-born British ２neurologist Professor Sir Ludwig “Poppa” Guttmann, founder of the Paralympic movement.

Guttmann was born in Tost, Germany (now Toszek, Poland) on this day in 1899 and went on to receive his 3M.D. in 1924. He subsequently began research on ４spinal cord injuries and performed several neurosurgical procedures, rising to prominence as one of Germany’s top neurosurgeons by his early thirties. However, with the rise of the Nazi party and the passing of the ５Nuremberg Laws in 1933, Guttmann was prevented from practising medicine professionally. Following ６Kristallnacht in 1938 and the increasing persecution of Jews in Germany, Guttmann was forced to leave Germany with his family and was able to escape to England in 1939.

In England, Guttmann advanced his research in ７paraplegia. In 1944, he put his innovative approach into practice as the director of the National Spinal Injuries Center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In 1948, he organized a 16-person archery contest, one of the first official competitive sporting events for wheelchair users. Later called the “Stoke Mandeville Games” or the “Olympics for the Disabled,” the competition demonstrated the power of elite sport to break down barriers for disability and garnered the attention of global medical and sporting communities.

In 1960, Guttmann facilitated the International Stoke Mandeville Games, following the 1960 Summer Olympics, the first of many Paralympic Games. His passion for patient care never faltered−he also founded the International Medical Society of Paraplegia (the International Spinal Cord Society) and the British Sports Association for the Disabled (Activity Alliance) in 1961. He received numerous accolades for his contributions, the highest among which was being knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in 1966.

Today, Paralympic athletes are rightfully recognized for their skills and achievements. The Paralympic Games continue to be a driving force for promoting the rights and independence of people with disabilities, with a lasting impact on equal treatment and opportunity.

彼自身はスポーツ選手でもなんでもなく、書いてあるとおり神経学者です。
パラリンピックは彼が1948年に障害者のためのアーチェリーの試合を実施させたのが前身。
現在では1960年のローマでのStoke Mandeville Gamesが第1回パラリンピックとして扱われてます。

Charles Chaplin portrays a womanizing city man who meets Tillie (Marie Dressler) in the country after a fight with his girlfriend (Mabel Normand). When he sees that Tillie's father (Mack Swain) has a very large bankroll for his workers, he persuades her to elope with him. In the city, he meets the woman he was seeing already, and tries to work around the complication to steal Tillie's money. He gets Tillie drunk in a restaurant and asks her to let him hold the pocketbook. Since she is drunk, she agrees, and he escapes with his old girlfriend and the money.

Today’s Doodle celebrates prolific Japanese singer and actor Mitsuko Mori, who became the first entertainer in Japanese history to perform 2,000 times in “Horoki” ("A Wanderer's Notebook"), a theater play based on the １autobiographical novel of author Fumiko Hayashi. In recognition of this unparalleled lifetime achievement, on this day in 2009, she became the first actress to ever receive Japan’s prestigious 2People’s Honor Award.

Born Mitsu Murakami in Kyoto, Japan on May 9, 1920, she made her cinematic debut at 14 in a historical drama film. Also a gifted vocalist, Mitsuko moved to Tokyo in 1941, where she sharpened her skills as a jazz singer, a talent she showcased throughout the decade on tours in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia.

In 1952, Mitsuko continued to prove her dynamic range when she made her comedic debut in a stage play featured on radio broadcasts across Japan−widespread exposure that cast her into the national spotlight. An established name in Japanese entertainment, Mitsuko premiered in “Horoki” in 1961 as the lead character Fumiko Hayashi, a role she played well into her 80s for a record 2,017 performances.

Before one of these productions in 2007, over 45 years since it first showed, Mitsuko told reporters that she was retiring her character’s signature reflex to good news−a forward somersault−to avoid injury in her old age. She gave her final “Horoki” performance in 2009, 3bowing out as a superstar of contemporary Japanese theater.

Today’s Doodle celebrates the Wadden Sea, the world’s largest network of １intertidal sand and２ mudflats, which spans the coastlines of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. On this day in 2009, UNESCO designated the Wadden Sea a World Heritage Site ３in recognition of its ４unparalleled ecological and geological importance and the decades of effort dedicated to its preservation.

Created by storms during the 14th and 15th centuries, the Wadden Sea is a relatively young wetland environment that comprises one of the world’s last remaining undisturbed intertidal ecosystems. This magnificent stretch of sea and sand houses numerous plant and animal species, including the grey seal and harbor ５porpoise. Considered one of the most critical regions globally for migratory birds, it’s estimated that the wetlands are visited by over 10 million African-Eurasian birds annually and can harbor up to 6.1 million birds at once!

She is engaged to Gus Esmond (Tommy Noonan), a naïve nerd willing to do or buy anything for her. However, Gus is under the control of his wealthy, upper-class father. Dorothy, on the other hand, is looking for a different kind of love, attracted only to men who are good-looking and fit.

1953年の作品「紳士は金髪がお好き」。
主演はマリリン・モンロー、ジェーン・ラッセル。
監督はハワード・ホークス。

ジャンルはミュージカル・コメディといったところ。
ストーリーは別に単純で特に変わった点はなし。
女二人の恋と馬鹿な男を描いたとでも言おう。
モンローが出演しているが、クレジット順はラッセルの後。
この当時はジェーン・ラッセルの方がスターでギャラも高かった。
モンローが出たのもギャラを安くできるからに過ぎません。
モンローの出ている映画は、基本ストーリー云々よりモンローを見るためと割り切ろう。


ちょっとおかしかったのHenry Spofford IIIが出てきたところ。
2人は大人を想像して、自分のテーブルに読んだのだが子供だった。
子供に「Mr.」を付けるなんて・・とか言ってましたね。
でも子供にも敬称付けるのはおかしくないでしょ、あんたらの早合点でしょうがと思いましたね。
この映画の原作は小説で、原作はHenry Spoffordはどうも大人の設定ですね。
映画化によって変えたのでしょう。


モンローを見たい人はこの映画見ましょう。
