Chuck Scott is a World War II veteran who is now a penniless drifter in Miami tormented by bizarre dreams. After finding a wallet and returning it to Eddie Roman, a vicious gangster, he is hired by Roman to be his driver. Roman tests his new driver, whom he nicknames Scotty, by assuming control of his car from the back seat. Scotty does not know that Roman has an accelerator in the rear passenger compartment. This bizarre trick unnerves Scotty and Roman's right-hand man Gino. Roman reveals himself as a tough gangster by killing any competition, and is harsh and controlling with his wife, Lorna. She goes for a ride every night, and one day she asks driver Scotty to take her to Havana, Cuba in exchange for $1,000.・・・・・・・

Anywhere with a view of the water will be packed with people watching the main event of the day: dragon boat racing. Teams of up to 90 people 1 pile into long wooden boats painted to resemble colorful dragons. After painting the eyes on the dragon to bring it to life, it’s time to paddle along to a drumbeat and get to the finish line before the other teams.
Besides the lively competition, traditional activities on this day 2ward off bugs and 3maladies as the summer heat brings an uptick in pest activities. Children often wear five-color silk threads for protection, and at home, people hang 4sachets of herbs and plants that repel bugs. Some try their hand at egg balancing at noon, which is said to bring good luck.
When it’s time for a snack, many will pull out realgar wine and sticky rice dumplings called zongzi, the latter of which honors the legacy of ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan.

Mary (Seymour) is the daughter of a French man and a Javanese mother and enjoys dancing. She has two lovers. One is a beachcomber named Barthelmess, who was tossed off a passing ship for failing to work and only seeks to drink gin. The other, named Hale, is a sickly young American who came to the island in hopes of regaining his health and is staying with his missionary uncle, named MacQuarrie, and his wife, named Bruce.
While on the island, natives from a neighboring island attack. The beachcomber reforms, and Mary comes to love him.
