梵名を、アールヤアヴァローキテーシュヴァラといい、観自在菩薩ともいい
一般には「観音さま」と呼ばれ、菩薩の中では最も親しまれてきました。

救いを求める相手によって、さまざ圭な姿に身を変えてあらわれ、大慈悲とすぐれた智慧で人びとの苦しみを除き、さらに切なる願いもかなえてくれる仏です。観音菩薩を信仰する人は、自分の身近にいる人にその化身を感じ、利益にあずかることができるとされています。

観音菩薩は姿を変えて（変化観音）衆生の願いにこたえてくれますが、変化しない本来の形を聖観音といいます。ふつう「観音」という場合は、この聖観音をさします。

勢至菩薩とともに、阿弥陀如来の脇侍をつとめ圭す。

サンスクリットのアヴァローキテーシュヴァラ（Avalokiteśvara）を、玄奘は「観察された（avalokita )」と「自在者(īśvara)」の合成語と解釈し「観自在」と訳した^[4]。鳩摩羅什訳では「観世音」であったが、玄奘は「古く光世音、観世音、観世音自在などと漢訳しているのは、全てあやまりである」といっている

みずからはいまだ悟りを得なくても、先に人々を悟りの岸に渡らせてあげたい、というのが、菩薩さまの大願なのです。

ですから、代表的な菩薩さま、観音菩薩、弥勒菩薩、文殊菩薩、普賢菩薩、虚空蔵菩薩さまなどは、ゆたかに髪をたくわえたり、腕輪や首かざりなどの装飾品を身に
つけて、在家のお姿で図像化されています。

ただ例外は地蔵菩薩さまで、出家の僧のお姿をされていることは、道ばたのお地蔵さんとして、みなさまよくご存じの通りです。これに対して、すでにお悟りをひら
