At the instigation of his half brother Lionel (Lloyd Hughes), Oliver Tressilian (Milton Sills), a wealthy baronet, is shanghaied and blamed for the death of Peter Godolphin (Wallace MacDonald), brother of Oliver's fiancée, whom Lionel actually has slain. At sea Oliver is captured by Spaniards and made a galley slave, but when he escapes to the Moors he becomes Sakr-el-Bahr, the scourge of Christendom. Learning of Rosamund's (Enid Bennett) impending marriage to his half brother, he kidnaps both of them, but to avoid the risk of giving her to Asad-ed-Din (Frank Currier), the Basha of Algiers, he surrenders to a British ship. Rosamund intercedes to save his life, and following the death of Lionel they are married.

Today’s Doodle celebrates the 107th birthday of Japanese composer Akira Ifukube−a １prodigious talent in classical music and cinematic film scores widely known for his work on the original soundtrack for the “Godzilla” movies of the 1950s.

Akira Ifukube was born on this day in 1914 in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan, into a distinguished 2family lineage that traces its origins back to at least the 7th-century. A passionate listener of European musical scores as a teenager, he 3aspired to intertwine his deep-rooted national identity into original compositions, an idea further solidified after listening to Russian composer Stravinsky’s 1913 emotive orchestral piece 4“The Rite of Spring” at 14 years old.

In 1935, Akira left home to study 5forestry at Hokkaido University, where he wrote 6”Japanese Rhapsody,” his first original orchestral number. Following 7a brief stint as a forestry officer and lumber processor, he chose to pursue music composition full time. In 1947, he released the first of his more than 250 film scores that he produced over the next half-century. The height of his film score career came in 1954 when he wrote the soundtrack for “Godzilla,” whose 7signature roar he created by taking a resin-covered leather glove and dragging it against the loose string of a double bass.

Outside of his lifelong work as a composer, Akira served as president of the Tokyo College of Music starting in 1976 and published a 1,000-page book on theory entitled “Orchestration.” The Japanese government honored his lifetime achievements with both8 the Order of Culture and 9the Order of the Sacred Treasure.

日本オープンゴルフ選手権競技が1927年5月28日に開催されました。

アメリカだと90年前でも音声付きで残ってるものですね。

The grandma's boy is a timid coward who cannot muster courage to woo his girl and is afraid of his rival. His loving grandma gives him a magic charm from the Civil War that had been used by his grandfather, which gives him the courage to capture a town criminal and win the girl. The "magic charm" turns out to be the handle of her umbrella and his grandma was pretending it was magical all along.

主演の佐分利信はまだ20代ですね。確かに二枚目だ。

今日は「探偵の日」です。

1891年の5月21日に帝國探明會という会社が、朝日新聞に「詐欺師や盗人の所在を調べる。他人の行動調査を実施する。」という内容の広告を出しました。
これが日本初の探偵広告とされています。

日本で探偵業を営むには、公安委員会への届出が必要となってます。
許可制ではないので、比較的ゆるい規制ではあります。


漫画や小説みたいに警察から依頼なんてことはなく、推理は探偵の業務ではありません。
浮気調査・素行調査だったり、人探しだったり、会社などの信用調査などの調査業務が主たる業務です。





今日はチャールズ・リンドバーグが1927年パリに到着し、世界で初めて単独での大西洋無着陸横断飛行に成功しました。
誤解されている人もいるようですが、あくまで「単独で」やったのが世界初だったということ。
単独でない大西洋無着陸飛行は1919年にジョン・オールコックとアーサー・ブラウンという人物が達成しています。
