レティクスはオーストリアに生まれた天文学者です。

レティクスはフェルトキルヒ、チューリッヒ、ウィッテンベルクで数学的な素養を収めた後に1537年にウィッテンベルク大学で教授として働きだします。そして、その二年後から二年間の間、コペルニクスと共に暮らします。影響を与えあっていたのです。当時の学問多型を考えたらニュートン力学も成立していませんし、電磁気に関する理解もありません。道具立てとして使える学問は天文学と数学なのです。

あえてその他を考えていくとすればユダヤ教の発展と共に伝わってきた「カバラ」と呼ばれる数の体系です。キリスト教の色々な話に基づき数字一つ一つに意味を付けていきます。13や7が比較的幸運な番号であるといった次第に一つ一つの数字に意味が加わるのです。この考えは数秘術として占い師が今でも受け継いでいる体系です。中世には王家の意思決定などの時に真面目にこうした「議論」がなされて実際の祭りごとが行われていました。有名な人ではミッシェル・のストラダムスはフランス王家に仕え、助言を与え地位を確立しています。レクティスも何人かのパトロンのもとで研究を続けます。

また、当時の宗教が政治的にも力を持っていた側面が大きいです。特に中世以前はキリスト教の教えに従い協会自治区が地方のあちらこちらにありました。経緯としては、1096年から1303年にかけての期間に十字軍の時代には聖地を確保するために十字軍が組織され、大規模な軍事行動が行われていました。

そうした時代背景のもと、16世紀前半に宗教改革をしたマルチン・ルターによるコペルニクス批判が指摘されます。宗教が科学に対する影響は大きいのです。ルターは聖書の一節であるヨシュアによる「日よとどまれ」（ヨシュア10：12〜13）という言葉に着目しています。「地球が動いているのではなくて太陽が動いている」という聖書の中での世界観が天文学にも適用される事が好ましい世の中だったのです。ルターの思想の中には実験と経験を重視して考える思考は見受けられません。ルターによれば千年以上前に著された聖書の言葉が何より重いのです。それだからルターはコペルニクスの考えを受け入れていないのです。ルターは教会が権威を持ちと堕落しているとの批判的な観点から神の言葉としての「聖書の文言」を大事にする聖書絶対主義を掲げました。また、キリスト教の中でもプロテスタントとカソリックが天文学に対して異なる見解を示します。
科学に対してキリスト教が偏見を持っていた事情は1973年にヨハネパウロ二世が「ガリレオ裁判の過ち」
を公式に謝罪するまで続きます・

レクティスは時代背景にも関わらずにコペルニクスを支持し続け天動説を進めていきます。コペルニクスの死後まもなく発刊された「天球の回転について」において天動説を形にします。後の天文学者が大事に使っていく概念を作り上げたのです。いわゆる「コペルニクス的転回」が大部分の人に理解されなかった時代に、レクティスは理解と復旧を進めたのです。

Rheticus is an astronomer born in Austria.

Copernicus criticism by Martin Luther who did the Reformation in the cause, the early 16th century of the background in such times has it pointed out. Religion has a big influence on science. By Jehosua who is one node of the Bible as for Luther "stay a day", and pay the attention to the word (Jehosua 10:12 - 13). It was the world where it was preferable for a view of the world in the Bible, "the earth did not move, and the sun moved" to be applied to astronomy. Lek Thijs continues supporting Copernicus without being concerned in the background in the times and pushes forward the Ptolemaic theory. I make the Ptolemaic theory a form in "about the turn of the celestial sphere" published soon posthumously of Copernicus. I made up the concept that a later astronomer used carefully. In the times when so-called "Copernican change" was not understood by most people, lek Thijs pushed forward understanding and restoration.
