『−文明が存続するかぎり、われわれは諸発見に依存しているのだから、社会的に価値のある科学目標の選択は、決定的に重要だ。（ところが）既成科学機構というものは優先順位の決定、
種々の分野にあたえる研究費の配分比率の決定におどろくほど理不尽である。ある問題は、その
支持者が政治的影響力をもったり、市民の感情にうまくアピールするため重視される。ところ
が、研究すれば宇宙についての理解を拡大でき、人間の福祉に貢献できる問題でも、無視される
別の問題もある。―また、研究の影響よりも研究自体しか考えない専門家たちが、科学文明の
社会をますます支配しているのは悲しむべきことである。おおかたの社会問題の性格は、主に技
術的なものだとみなす習慣にはまりこんでいるので、専門家はあたかも社会の指導者の如く振舞
うことが許されているばかりか、しばしば期待ざれてもいる。ハーヴェイーブルックスのことば
によれば、（二〇世紀における社会の進歩史の概略は、公的政策のますます多くの部分が、政治
家から専門家の手に移っているといえる。政治的選択の問題は、しばしば、政治家同志の技術的

る。だがＩ、問題はいったいだれがそれをやるかということである。
デュボスはつづいて、
『−あきらかなことであるが、学識ゆたかで、能力ある予測家グループでさえ、人間形成する
うえで、大きな役割をもつ要因を、計算から除外しているのである。たとえば、アメリカ科学文
芸アカデミーが「西暦二〇〇〇年にむかって」（ベル・一九六七）と名づけて組織した委員会は、
社会科学者と少数の自然科学者だけで構成されており、哲学者、牧師、作家、芸術家、政治家、
兵士、建築家、機械技術者、ビジネスマン、学生などは参画していない。それにもかかわらず、
この人たちのほうが、社会科学者、自然科学者よりはるかに将来を形成する力をうみだす可能性
は大きいのであるＩ』
と述べているから、彼は、こういう人たちの参加を望んでいるのかも知れない。だが、この人
たちについてはこの一節の文章しか記述されていないので、それもどこまで本気なのかわからな
いというのが実情である。

『―総合大学および単科大学は、知識の考えうるほとんどすべての側面に関連する科目を教授
し、研究ずるよう組織されている。しかし、そこでは、ばらばらの情報の断片を統合する機会
も、人間生活でひじょうに大きな役割をはたしている要求、価値、熱望と諸情報とを関連づける
機会もほとんどない。ところが、現在の人間の問題のすべてＩ人種間闘争、経済成長、生態学
的危機、医療給付のありかた、都市の荒廃、環境汚染、住宅および運輸問題、騒音防止、海洋学
研究等々−は、自然科学、行動科学、政治科学など、多岐にわたる専門分野の力に訴えなけれ
ば理解することも、有効に対処することもできないものである。（ところが）課目中心で、目的
中心ではない大学の機構のなかでは、知識の統合をはかることは容易ではない。にもかかわら
ず、われわれの住む世界について包括見解を得るには、知識の統合はどうしても必要であり、わ
れわれの望む世界をつくり出す上に、それはいっそう重要なのである』
要するに、一口でいえば、現在の機構ではダメだということである。
それじやあいったいどうすればいいんだ？
結論は、物理化学的諸科学、行動科学、社会科学、自然科学、および生理学、生態学その他の
生物科学をむすんだ知識の統合をはかる。そしてそれで価値ある進歩への社会的目標を設定する
のだというのである。
『―そこから生まれる科学と技術は、巨大機械をさらに拡大するのではなく、生態学的なバラ
ンスを維持し、人間の潜在力を開発して、文明に最善の寄与ができるのである。このことはＪ
九世紀、二〇世紀の初頭からわれわれが受け継いだ考え方では、困難であろう。その目的がどん
なにつまらなくても、その長期的影響がどんなに有害であってもわれわれは、技術の。進歩″を
もってわれわれの社会に対応させてきた。″進歩″ということばは、現在では、目的性を帯びる
ことなく、その前進が破滅と絶望に通じる場合であっても、ただひたすらすすむことを意味して
おり、それでもわれわれはかまわず″進歩″してきたのだが、（今度は統合された知識により）
価値ある進歩への社会的目標がまず設定される。これで、はじめて、計画は、人間の努力に対し

なるほど、たしかにそうなったら、人間の努力もたいへん楽しくなるであろう。一日もはやく
そうなって欲しいと、私も切に希望するのであるが、しょせんそれは「エルドラドー」に過ぎな
いのだ。いったい、だれがそれらのおびただしい科学知識を統合した超知識の所有者となるの
か？ 第一、そういう超知識の所有者をつくり出す教育機関をつくり出すという難関の解決から
はじめねばならぬのである。エルドラドーとはご承知の通り、望んでも得られぬユートピアのこ
とであるが、そういったからといって、ルネーデュボス先生はけっしてお叱りにならないであろ
う。なぜならば先生みずから、このことは一九世紀、二〇世紀初頭からわれわれがうけ継いだ考
えかたでは困難であろう、とおっしやっているのだ。まさに私はその通りであると思う。このこ
とに関して私はもっとあとのほうであなたに語らねばならぬ多くのことが出てくるのだが、ユー
トピアといえば、ルネーデュボスは、最後に、今まで数多くあらわれた文学的形態、あるいは純
粋な社会的ユートピアを否定し、もっと新しい観点に立つ未来観を打ち出している。それは、今
までの未来像は、未来を常に過去の延長としてとらえているので、それでは駄目で、将来という
ものは、真に新しい冒険としてとらえなければならぬと説く。Ａ・トフラーの「未来の衝撃」あ
るいはドラッカーの「断絶」を思い出させる言葉であるが、要するに、現在の状態からまったく
はなれて、可能な将来のモデルを数多くつくり出し、そうした将来を実現する行動方法を想定す
る必要があるというのである。そうすることにより。
「人間はみずからの運命を支配できる機会がまだあると希望ナることができる」
とむすんでいる。この文章で″目覚める理性″はおわっている。
”目覚める理性”はそれでおわったが、私にとってその文章は、終結とはならず、かえって長い
思考の発端となったのであった。彼はこともなくペンをおいたが、私はこの一連の言葉のなか
に、あるいは語っているデュボス自身も気ずいてはいないかも知れぬまことに意想外な発想のひ
そんでいることを感じたのである。
いったい、過去を全くはなれた未来とはなにか？ それは一種の「突然変異」ではないのか？
つまりは「文明の突然変異」を意味するのではないのか。一九世紀におこり、二〇世紀にいたっ
て頂点に達したヒトの科学文明の″種″が行きづまり、ついに突然変異をねがうよりほかになく
なった究極を、彼デュボスは無意識のうちに洩らしてしまったのではないのか？ 現代科学のも
っともすぐれた知性のひとつが、究極において行きっくところはそれしかないのであろうかとノ私はしばし深沈たる思いに沈んだのであったが、しかし、もしもそうだとするならば、事はまこ
とに重大だというべきである。非常事態といわねばなるまい。なぜならば１、
「文明の突然変異」とは、まずその前に、「ヒトの突然変異」がなければならぬからである。
科学がはたして諸文化の中心か／
行きづまった科学が、科学以外の分野に向かって、協力を呼びかけようとするのは、ルネーデ
ュボスだけではない。たとえば、ノーベル物理学賞受賞者のイシドールーアイザック・ラビもま
たそのひとりである。
彼は「文化の中心としての科学」のなかで、こういっている。
『われわれは今や、ひとつの新しい時代、強烈な衝撃の時代に足を踏み入れようとしている。そ
れは科学の進歩を通して人間の思想の進化の方向を目ざしている。この進歩は必然的にわれわれ
の本質的な思考に変化をあたえ、その変化は時間、空間、因果律についてのわれわれの基本的な
考え方から始まり、人間の肉体、人間の心、さらに社会組織の諸法則についてのもっと偉大な理
解を達成しようとするところまで進んでいくようになる。新しい技術、新しい知的な道具、新し
い発明は着実に現われ、これはわれわれの外なる世界、内なる世界について、われわれが何を考
えるかに影響するだけでなく、また、どのように考えるかについても影響をあたえるであろう。
生物学や自然科学を学んでいる科学者だったらだれでもこう感じている。産業も、そうした考え
で広がっていく。機械仲買人でさえ、それぐらいのことは心得ている。（ところが）不幸にして、
この新しい事実、未来の新しい波は、今のところ、自然模写の芸術や文学に影響するに至ってい
ない。これは非常に残念なことである。というのは、われわれはさし追っている大きな変革に対
してわれわれを準備させ、指導の手を貸してくれるものとして詩人、芸術家、小説家、エッセイ
ストを求めているからである。このような芸術家の不足は、来るべき時代の生活がもつ一般的な
特徴を貧弱なものとするであろう。イングランドで、両家に詩人、聖職者と作家が産業革命から
超然としていた結果、優雅な芸術の手ほどきを受けていない新しい力が、こんにちイングランド
で見られるような怪奇な産業都市ｊ−マンチェスター、バーミンガム、リーーズをつくりだしたの
である。詩人が発言していることはいるのだが、その詩人の声は指導の声であるべきなのに、抗

世紀にバスに乗りおくれた。そして二〇世紀にも同じ轍を踏むであろう』
なんたる傲慢！ これが指導と協力を呼びかける者の態度であろうか？ これでは協力を求め

物きわまる人物といわざるを得ない。彼の思考はこうである。科学を諸文化の中心に据えて新し

の王座に傲然と座ろうとするその鼻もちならぬ態度を改めぬかぎり、彼の科学を（貧弱）なもの
にするだろう。いまだかつて科学と技術と産業社会が、画家と詩人、聖職者と作家の声に心から
耳を傾けたことがあったか？ むしろ、軽蔑をあらわしたのは彼らのほうではなかったか？ そ
の結果、怪奇な産業都市をつくりあげてしまって、今になってその罪を、画家や詩人に転嫁しよ
うとするその心情は、私だって心から軽蔑せざるを得ないのだ。
科学と技術以外に幸福と繁栄をあたえるものはほかにないという、田心いあがった彼の考えかた
は、この本のいたるところに見いだされる。
！―−古代の諸文化の最も偉大な中心地、エジプト、メソポタミア、ペルシャ、中国、南イタリ
ア、ギリシアなどが今では後進国であり、かつては未開で無知と迷信に明け暮れ、原始的な技術
しかもたなかったような野蛮人の居住地、イングランド、スカンジナヴィア、ドイッ、アメリ
カ、さらにはロシアのシベリアの大草原地帯などが、今では偉大な先進工業国となっているとい
うことは歴史の皮肉である。これらの場合に見られる歴史の教訓は、科学と技術の進化の競争で
とり残されたものは、ますますおくれてしまうということである。これらの後進国が犯した失敗
は、科学と技術に適応できなかったという失敗であったＩ。
メソポタミアの農村の一老人と、ニューヨークの大会社のエリート社員と、どちらが人間とし
て幸福であるかは分からぬのである。Ｇ・Ｒ・ティラーがいうように「アメリカ人の″生活水準

科学者のこういう考えかたが、実は今日の事態をひきおこした根本原因ではないかと私は思う。
世界一流の頭脳がこういうことをいっているようでは、まことに、ルネこアユボスが無意識のう
ちに考えるごとく、やはりヒトは突然変異でもせぬかぎり救われぬ存在であるのかな、と思わざ
るを得ないではないか。
