ピカールの関心
アウグスト・ピカールは宇宙と深海に
大いなる関心を持っていた人でした。
アウグスト・ピカールはスイスのフランス系家庭に生まれ
少年時代から科学に興味を示し、
チューリッヒ工科大学で物理学を学び宇宙線、
オゾンといった研究をしていくのですが
その探究心は冒険に繋がっていく
ダナミックなものでした。
成層圏へ挑んだピカール
まず、
アウグスト・ピカールは成層圏に挑みます。
フランス国立基金から資金援助を得て、
自らが設計した気球に水素を詰めて上空16,000 mの
成層圏に達します。これは気球による世界初の達成でした。
空の果てに人類が初めてたどり着いたのです。
その先は遥かなる宇宙なのです。
深海へ挑むピカール
その後、ピカールはバチスカーフと名付けた
深海潜水艇で深海に挑みます。
上空の果ての次は深海の果てを目指します。
バチスカーフは鉄の錘を抱いて沈んでいき
浮き上がる時には錘を切り離す
という仕組みで探検をします。浮力はガソリンでした。
ピカールの系譜
そして、冒険家ピカールの血は代々受け継がれていきます。
息子であるジャック・ピカールを伴ってバチスカーフに搭乗し、
マリアナ海溝のチャレンジャー海淵到達を達成しています。
更には孫のベルトラン・ピカールが世界で初めて、
気球による無着陸世界一周を達成しています。
おじいさんの冒険を思い起こしながら飛んでいたのでしょう。
思いは空のかなたへ。素敵な一族ですね。
