四門出家



　

かれが、王室の園林を遊観すべく宮門を出ると、あるときは道ばたに力なくあえぐ衰えた老人に、あるときは痛み苦しんでいる病者に、あるときは親類縁者のなげき悲しむ死者の葬列に、あるときは神々しいまでに聖なる出家者に出会ったとされる「四門出遊Ｌの説話も、伝説であったとしても、それは、かれの心に起こった、人類一般の運命への観察心を示すものであろう。

　どうすれば、自分は、また人類は、この運命を克服することができるか、日夜、かれの心を占めるようになったこの問題を解決するため、ついにかれは、宮廷を出る決心をす。

 

　すでに妃ヤショーダラーとのあいだに、一子ラーフラＲａｈｕｌａ ４生まれていた。家系を絶たないことが、インドでは家主たる者の第一の義務であったから、今や安心して家を出ることができる。かれは、王宮の人たちの妨害をおそれて、夜半ひそかに王宮をのがれ出た。国境に達して、従者と乗馬とを帰して、自分の決意を父王に告げさせた。

　王宮では、掌中の珠をうばわれたように悲嘆にくれたが、太子に翻意のないことを知って、その意志をみとめざるを得なかった。

　古いたしかな資料によれば、そのときシャカは二十九歳であった。

 

ビンビサーラ王との出会い

 

　かれは、当時修道者たちの多く住んでいた南方マガダ国を目ざして行った。

　マガダはガンジス河の南にあって、北西にあるコーサラ国に次いで、当時の新あった。

シャカが、当時の修道者たちの習慣にしたがって、首都ラージャガハＲａｊａｇａｈａ（ラージャグリハ　王舎城）の街路を托鉢しているのを宮殿からながめた国王ビンビサーラBimbisａｒａは、常人とちがったシャカの外見や態度にひかれ、わざわざ郊外に食事を終えたかれをたずね、その素性をきき、政治や軍事の面で自分に協力してくれるようたのんだが、シャカは、求道の決意をのべてことわった。王はしかたなく、修行が完成したら、自分を教え導いてくれるよう頼んだ。その

通り、のちにシャカが成道後、この王は、シャカの教えにしたがい、熱心な信者になっ。

 

 

Four Gates
