TETSUYA Endo Interview
"Seizing the Summer"
Although he can't fight Kenny Omega, TETSUYA Endo will nominate his challenger for the November 3rd Ota-ku show at September 7th's Korakuen Hall show!
KO-D Openweight Champion TETSUYA Endo made good on his promise to win the KING OF DDT Tournament. As reported in the press conference, he will be unable to have a title match with Kenny Omega in Ota-ku on November 3rd. However, Endo declared that he will nominate his new challenger at the Korakuen Hall show on September 7th.
As Endo stands at the summit of DDT, who does he have his eye on?
☆You won the KOD Tournament as champion. You have completely taken over and dominated DDT.
Endo:
So far, everything has progressed according to plan. It feels like everything's going my way.
☆Before the tournament started, when you declared that you'd nominate Kenny as your challenger, you talked about how much pressure you could handle, and knowing how to put pressure on others yourself. What made you change?
Endo:
The biggest starting point for me this year was the Openweight title match with (Masato) Tanaka. When I won that, I got the feeling that I was capable of bigger things than I thought I was. Until now, I'd felt weighed down by my objectives, but there was another level above that... I gradually started to see that I could succeed even difficult challenges. I really do think that my match with Tanaka is the best one I've had this year, because it was the key to becoming the person I am now.
☆Looking at your life in pro-wrestling, do you see it as a big victory?
Endo:
Even the people watching, I think the number of people watching that match who thought I'd win was pretty small. But, I kept going and going, and I turned things around, and I won... When I think about how my matches usually progress, it feels pretty established. It was like, "I can take a lot of punishment, so I'm kinda strong". It's linked to my confidence.
☆Takeshita stood out for a long time in DDT, but I think things have changed now. How do you feel about your relationship with Takeshita?
Endo:
I don't know if the people watching really know, but I don't think you can really compare me to Takeshita right now. He's always going after (Jun) Akiyama, and it feels like he isn't really interested in belts. I'm not really that aware of him. But, for a while, I think I didn't really know who I was as the wrestler TETSUYA Endo. I think Takeshita can gain a lot by having matches with Akiyama, but that'll come later. I'll defend this belt, and Takeshita will overcome the wall that is Akiyama, and after that, our story... I think that's a crucial thing.
☆Takeshita has a singles match against Akiyama at Ota-ku on November 3rd, so, as champion, you won't be able to nominate him, right?
Endo:
There's a chance of winning, so I thought about nominating Akiyama, because even if he doesn't have a belt, I think he can help me evolve as a wrestler. I definitely think I've evolved since I got this belt. That's the difference. I've evolved as a wrestler, and my way of thinking as a person is also different now.
☆I see. You weren't granted the title defence against Kenny, but what do you think of the challenger you'll nominate for Ota-ku at the Korakuen Hall show on September 7th?
Endo:
At this point in time, I haven't decided on my opponent yet, but I just want you to trust me that it'll definitely live up to the hype. I'm the Champion, TETSUYA Endo. I will choose an opponent that people coming to see the match will definitely agree with. I don't want anyone to worry about that.
☆Do you think you can offer a match that people who wanted to see your match with Kenny will be convinced by?
Endo:
I'll prepare an amazing match for them.
☆Looking at the KOD tournament as a whole in the press conference, it was said that it was at a higher level (than in previous years). As champion, how did you feel about it?
Endo:
In the past, I won against MAO (who debuted about three years after I did) and Kazuki Hirata in the semifinals, wrestlers who gave the impression that they were relatively lucky to get so far in the tournament. However, this year, there were Akito, T-Hawk and (Kazusada) Higuchi, and although none of them have ever been KO-D Openweight Champion, they are all accomplished wrestlers who seemed to get so far by pure ability.
☆It was also the first time since 2009 that the reigning champion was in the tournament.
Endo:
The champion has to be the strongest in the company, and in all the KOD tournaments I've taken part in, I have strong memories of my victories. So, when I lost to Akito in the first round, I was seriously considering seppuku.
☆What a thing to say...
Endo:
Yeah. But, Loser Comes Back is a great rule. Afterwards, on Twitter, I tweeted "Real Sandwich Man", because (the comedy duo) Sandwich Man also won a Loser Comes Back chance in the M-1 (M-1 Grand Prix, a comedy competition) in 2007, and they won. They're from Miyagi prefecture, too, so I wanted to say something about them, but I don't think I got my point across very well *wry smile*
☆I get it. So, if I were to ask you what "strength" means to you, how would you answer?
Endo:
I've been saying this since the start of the year, but my theme for this year is "being as good as my word". I think strength means having the power to follow through with what you say. So, if I say I'm going to get the belt, I'll get the belt, and if I say I'm going to win the tournament, I'll win the tournament. That's what I think it means to be strong.
☆It's true. You said that at the start of the tournament. That drew a lot of attention, and you stayed true to your word.
Endo:
I didn't even say that to my opponents, I just said it without thinking. I said it so Kenny would have to come here. It ended up disappointing pro-wrestling fans a little, but we agreed to have a match together. It's happening because I said it's going to happen. So, it's important to put things into words.
☆In other words, it's a fight against the current state of the world.
Endo:
It seemed like there was a small possibility, so I wanted to take a chance. Pro-wrestlers never think they've lost from the start.
☆So, now, there's talk about who you're going to nominate for your new challenger.
Endo:
Although I have an objective to some extent, I might change my mind depending on appeals I get from other wrestlers. For me, this is not just a chance for all the wrestlers in DDT, it's a chance for *all* wrestlers.
☆There's a chance you'll change your mind if someone speaks up?
Endo:
It's not zero, because I'm the kind of person who just goes with the flow.
☆It's the big match at Ota-ku, so you have to think of a suitable opponent.
Endo:
The coronavirus situation isn't finished yet, so to have the match at Ota-ku, I think it has to be a suitable gamble. But, I think the person who wins that bet has to be a pro-wrestling champion. Including everyone together: my opponent, the fans, the people backstage, we will make the Ota-ku General Gymnasium show a success. I'm definitely preparing a big surprise, so offering something worth more than the price of the tickets to the people who come to see us.
