House votes to create commission to investigate Jan. 6 Capitol riot

The House approved a bill to establish a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, but the measure faces an uphill battle in the Senate amid Republican opposition.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the panel as proposed would be "slanted and unbalanced" and repetitive of work already underway by law enforcement and Congress. While a few Republicans have indicated they would buck McConnell, it is uncertain if there are enough of them to overcome a filibuster.

House passes bill targeting hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

The House has passed a bill aimed at addressing hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The bill, passed by the Senate last month, is a response to a massive uptick in attacks against Asian Americans since the pandemic began.

It establishes a point person at the Justice Department who would review hate crime incidents reported to law enforcement agencies and provide more guidance to state and local entities to make it easier to report hate crimes. President Biden could sign it as early as the end of the week.

Californians support vaccine proof or negative coronavirus test at venues, poll shows

As California's businesses reopen, a majority of state residents are in support of allowing entertainment venues to require proof that their patrons are vaccinated or have tested negative for the coronavirus, and support allowing some employers to require vaccinations of workers, according to a statewide poll conducted by UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies that was funded in part by The Times.

California will wait until June 15 to adopt new CDC mask guidelines

Californians fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can go mask-free in most indoor settings starting June 15, officials have announced.

The CDC said last week that available evidence demonstrated it was safe for fully vaccinated people to go without masks in most places, whether outdoors or inside. But state officials have opted to wait before implementing the new guidelines to allow businesses and workers time to prepare for the change - and residents more time to receive their shots.
