Eric Carle has died at 91. His picture books, including ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar,’ were a story-time staple for decades.
Simply told and radiantly illustrated, Carle’s books sold more than 170 million copies. Generations of young readers were enchanted by “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” (1969) and its ravenous protagonist, one of the best-loved characters since Peter Rabbit. Carle died Sunday at his home in Northampton, Mass.
