Mr. Mikitani of Rakuten, free shipping as planned-leak is “anachronism”
(Bloomberg): Rakuten's Chairman and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani posted on Twitter that a free shipping service for purchasers over a certain amount will be provided as scheduled. The report has responded to reports that the Fair Trade Commission has begun an interview, saying the service could violate antitrust laws.
Mr. Mikitani argued that measures to free shipping on products with a total price of \ 3980 or more were "to meet consumer needs and increase store sales." He criticized the report that the JFTC would investigate, saying, "The way of leaking JFC and administrative media and applying restraint is too anachronistic and too bad."
Mikitani said in a lecture on the same day that Rakuten Ichiba is losing to Amazon because of shipping costs, and said that it will be free from March 18. He acknowledged that some store owners were opposed, and said, "If you stop buying at your end, it makes no sense. I want to succeed with you whatever you want."
NHK reported on the same day that the JFTC has begun an investigation, according to the source of the official. Opinions were raised by shoppers over free shipping.
"Nothing can be said, including whether or not we are investigating," said the Secretary-General of the Fair Trade Commission, Shuichi Sukyu. "We will respond based on law and evidence," he said. A Rakuten spokeswoman said, "We cannot answer individual surveys, but we will cooperate fully with the surveys."
With the aftermath of free shipping, there is a move to withdraw from Rakuten Ichiba, and workmen, a major workwear sales company, will stop selling at the end of January. A spokeswoman explained that the company decided to withdraw because users could feel unfair compared to its own site, which is free with purchases of 10,000 yen or more.
