Two large Bay Area school districts to vote on mandatory vaccinations

Proposals to mandate vaccinations for tens of thousands of staff and students at two Bay Area school districts are drawing support from health experts and many families. The school boards for Oakland and West Contra Costa Unified are slated to vote on the proposed mandates next week. If approved, these two Bay Area districts would become the first in Northern California to do so.

S.F. is the only county in California where Larry Elder isn't leading the recall replacement vote

Voters conclusively chose not to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday, but if he didn't beat the recall, almost every California county would have voted to replace him with Larry Elder − except for possibly San Francisco. Early results show that Kevin Paffrath has received the most votes among San Franciscans for who should replace Newsom.

Squaw Valley’s new name is Palisades Tahoe. What does it mean for the rest of Tahoe?

On Monday, after a year’s worth of community Zoom hearings, committee brainstorms, marketing meetings and consultations with tribal leaders, the famous ski resort announced its new name: Palisades Tahoe. “Our storied past will remain but we are evolving,” the resort said in a video announcement. “But the old name didn’t match our values, our spirit or who we are.”

Bay Area districts debate how to make schools safe during pandemic

Behind the scenes of reopened classrooms, adults are still debating how to keep schools safe amid a pandemic. Each district has adopted its own policy on masking, vaccination, testing, ventilation or more, making for a dizzying array of rules − many of which have led to community outcry.

Los Angeles, the second largest district in the country, has become something of a standout, requiring weekly testing as well as vaccinations for all students and staff − a policy that exceeds health requirements and pressures other districts to follow suit.

110 lightning ground strikes hit the Bay Area in one night

The Bay Area saw around 110 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes overnight as a thunderstorm rolled through the region, bringing light rain and drizzle to areas that were under a red-flag warning for high fire danger. The National Weather Service said it counted around 1,100 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes statewide.

The strike in Santa Clara County appeared to be “right in the middle” of the 2020 SCU Lightning Complex burn scar, which Bay Area meteorologists said was good.

Positive signs in COVID infection, hospital trends in Bay Area. It's unclear if they will hold

The Bay Area may be seeing the first signs that the delta surge is finally waning. But public health experts warn that this fourth wave is unlike any other the region has seen so far, and it’s too soon to say how fast it will ebb.

The rules require employees who work in high-risk settings, like police officers, to be vaccinated by Oct. 13. All other employees must be fully inoculated by November.
