L.A. County announces new vaccination rules for sporting events, theme parks and bars
Los Angeles County will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative coronavirus test to enter Dodger and SoFi stadiums as well as Major League Soccer venues for events with more than 10,000 people, the public health director confirmed. Those venues, as well as any outdoor setting with such a large attendance - including theme parks and arenas - will be subject to new, stricter requirements beginning next month.
The new L.A. County health order also stipulates that proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required at indoor bars, wineries, breweries, nightclubs and lounges; a negative coronavirus test cannot be used to enter.

Real estate heir Robert Durst is convicted of murder in the death of his close friend Susan Berman
A jury on Friday convicted Robert Durst of murder in the death of Susan Berman, finding true the prosecution's case that Durst, heir to a Manhattan real estate empire, shot Berman in the back of the head in 2000 to keep her from telling police about the death of his wife nearly two decades earlier.
For five months, jurors in an Inglewood courtroom heard testimony from prosecution witnesses, watched hours of Durst's recorded interviews with law enforcement and filmmakers, scrutinized documents and, finally, heard from Durst himself.

Biden administration appeals order to stop expelling migrants under health law
The Biden administration is appealing a federal court ruling that halts the use of a public health order to quickly expel migrants with children who are stopped along the U.S.-Mexico border.
U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan on Thursday had given the government two weeks to stop its use of Title 42, a 1944 health statute used originally by the Trump administration, citing concerns about spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pentagon reverses course and acknowledges only civilians were killed in an August drone strike
The Pentagon retreated from its defense of a drone strike that killed multiple civilians in Afghanistan last month, announcing Friday that an internal review revealed that only civilians were killed in the attack, not an Islamic State extremist as first stated.
For days after the Aug. 29 strike, Pentagon officials asserted that it had been conducted correctly, despite numerous civilians being killed, including children.

Declining child coronavirus cases indicate generally safe school reopenings in L.A. County
The early weeks of fully opened schools throughout Los Angeles County have coincided with declining pediatric coronavirus cases, the first indication that campuses are generally operating safely without a troubling number of outbreaks.
The low number of school coronavirus outbreaks will allow the county's 80 school districts to adopt relaxed quarantine practices when an unvaccinated student is exposed to an infected person and has met certain safety conditions, L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer announced.

First effort to recall Los Angeles D.A. George Gascón fizzles out, but a retry is coming
With its first attempt all but certain to end in failure, the campaign to recall Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón from office says it will relaunch its efforts later this year.
The campaign, which needed to collect about 580,000 signatures by Oct. 26 to force Gascón into a recall election, had compiled just 200,000 a little over five weeks before the deadline, according to a spokesman.

How Newsom defeated the recall: Early leads in suburbs, overwhelming margins in big cities
The movement to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom appears to have fizzled in large suburban Southern California regions and other "swing" counties, giving the incumbent a sizable cushion to defeat the effort to oust him, preliminary data show.
There are many ballots yet to be counted. But out of the more than 9.1 million votes tabulated as of early Wednesday, nearly 64% were in favor of keeping Newsom in office.
That margin, which could still tighten as more ballots are processed, was fueled by lopsided victories in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County - both traditional Democratic strongholds.
