Senate Republicans block bill that would fund government, stave off U.S. default
Lawmakers now must scramble to pass a stop-gap measure to prevent parts of the government from shutting down on Friday. The legislation Republicans opposed would have also raised the debt ceiling, and the political standoff could lead to an economic crisis in several weeks if left unaddressed.
