Haiti struck by 7.2-magnitude earthquake, leveling buildings in parts of country
The massive quake struck Saturday morning, leveling dwellings in southwest portions of the country and shaking buildings from the Dominican Republic to Jamaica. Initial reports suggested damage near the epicenter, 7.4 miles northeast of Saint-Louis du Sud, where the temblor struck at 8:29 a.m. The reported magnitude from the U.S. Geological Survey was greater than the catastrophic 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the island nation in 2010, resulting in more than 220,000 casualties.
