Steve Bannon taken into custody on contempt charges

The Boston Globe
2021/11/16
BREAKING NEWS ALERT

Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, surrendered to federal authorities on Monday to face contempt charges after defying a subpoena from a House committee investigating January’s insurrection at the US Capitol.

Bannon was taken into custody Monday morning and is expected to appear in court later in the afternoon. The 67-year-old was indicted on Friday on two counts of criminal contempt – one for refusing to appear for a congressional deposition and the other for refusing to provide documents in response to the committee’s subpoena.

One more regulatory hurdle remains: On Tuesday, advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make more detailed recommendations on which youngsters should get vaccinated, with a final decision by the agency’s director expected shortly afterwards.

COVID-19 cases are spiking in Europe. What does that mean for California?

Last week, 2 million cases were reported in Europe − the continent's highest number of cases in a week since the pandemic started. Some European countries have a percentage of fully vaccinated people similar to California, so here's what the trend overseas could mean for the state.

Global initiative on climate action adopted by nearly 200 countries

Government negotiators from nearly 200 countries have adopted a new action plan to fight climate change.

The deal calls for an eventual end of some coal-fueled power generation and fossil fuel subsidies. It also includes additional financial incentives sought by poorer nations that anticipate harms from climate change out of proportion with their roles in causing it.

Most importantly, negotiators said, it preserves, although barely, the overarching goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times. The world has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit).

Global negotiators in Glasgow agreed to do more to fight climate change and aid vulnerable nations, but left crucial questions unresolved.

The new deal leaves unresolved the crucial question of how much and how quickly each nation should cut its emissions over the next decade.

And it still leaves many developing countries far short of the funds they need to build cleaner energy and cope with increasingly extreme weather disasters.

Nations strike climate deal with coal compromise

The Boston Globe

BREAKING NEWS ALERT

Government negotiators from nearly 200 countries have adopted a new deal on climate action after a last-minute intervention by India to water down the language on cutting emissions from coal.

Several countries including small island states said they were deeply disappointed by the move to “phase down,” rather than “phase out” coal power, the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
