Gen. Milley to face tough questions on Afghanistan withdrawal, Trump revelations. Watch our live coverage and analysis.

Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is expected to face sharp questions from a Senate panel on the U.S. military’s tumultuous exit from Afghanistan and reporting that he was so fearful that President Donald Trump’s actions might spark war with China that he engaged in secret phone calls with his Chinese counterpart.

Also set to appear before the Senate Armed Services Committee are Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., commander of U.S. Central Command. The military leaders are expected to take heat about tactical decisions made during the rushed evacuation and be pressed on plans for future counterterrorism operations without a presence in Afghanistan.

A federal judge Monday ordered that all correctional officers and staff entering California's prisons be vaccinated.

The sweeping order covers all 34 of California's prisons and does allow for religious and medical exemptions to be sought by the employees. He rejected efforts to block the requirement by Gov. Gavin Newsom and the prison guards union.

Senate Republicans block bill that would fund government, stave off U.S. default

Lawmakers now must scramble to pass a stop-gap measure to prevent parts of the government from shutting down on Friday. The legislation Republicans opposed would have also raised the debt ceiling, and the political standoff could lead to an economic crisis in several weeks if left unaddressed.

Senate Republicans blocked a bill to avert a government shutdown and a debt default in an effort to undercut President Biden and Democrats.
Monday, September 27, 2021 6:46 PM EST

Republicans who had voted to raise the debt cap by trillions when their party controlled Washington argued on Monday that Democrats must shoulder the entire political burden for doing so now, given that they control the White House and both houses of Congress.

Their position was calculated to portray Democrats as ineffectual and overreaching at a time when they are already toiling to iron out deep party divisions over a $3.5 trillion social safety net and climate change bill, and to pave the way for a bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure measure whose fate is linked to it.
