Furusato nozei (Hometown Tax Donation) program, launched in 2008, allows taxpayers to donate to any municipality (except for their hometown) of their choice and receive "thank you gift" and tax cuts.

There are many sites provide Furusato nozei "thank you gift" which you can choose before you donate.

Here I use “Rakuten” as an example because it is the most popular online shopping site in Japan and you will always gain points at every of your shoppings even it is Furusato nozei "thank you gift".

Deadline
The payment/settlement need to transferred/done by 12/31
For example, if you pay by credit card, it has to be settled by 12/31. Otherwise it will be calculated to the year after next year.

(1.) Simulate how much you can spend (donate):

This is just an estimate amount so personally I always minus 15,000yen from there just to be safe.
If you have high income, you might want to minus more to be safe.

(2.) choose something you think it’s over \2000 value
Because you can not get fully deducted. \2000 is your cost

(3.) Make sure the item you choose has “ふるさと納税” wording.

(4) Answers the questions above the red purchase button.
Depending on the items you choose, you usually only get questions #1, 2, 4

1. Understand your account's name should be the same name as you ID registered in Japan. Choose 理解した。

2. Understand your money will be used in one of the purposes. Choose anything is fine.

3. Understand Furusato Donations does NOT work for you if you buy things from the prefecture you live. For example, if you live in Kanagawa, you won't get tax cut if you buy things from Kanagawa. Choose 理解した

4. 要望する means the prefectures you donate will send you some document to fill in your My Number ID and attach copy of it and send it back.
You don’t need to care about any tax declaration(自己申告、確定申告）. After you fill in and return those doc. back to the senders, they will deduct your city tax spread to 12 months next year.
You have to send back the document by Jan. 10th (arrival). If you missed the deadline, you have to do ↓↓tax return(確定申告)↓↓

If you has share loss or medical expanses or anything to declare or you need to file tax return(確定申告）or you donate more than 5 prefectures, you HAVE TO choose 要望しない
You will then go file your tax return to the city tax department in person or via internet

10. Do you want a Noshi
A form of ceremonial origami, consisting of white paper folded with a strip of dried abalone or meat, and expressing good wishes
It will say "Happy xxxxxx"
