Spain Works on New Bladeless Wind Turbine

Almost 100 billion U.S. dollars was invested in wind energy over the world last year and it now accounts for around 4 percent of total worldwide electricity usage.

In Spain, that figure jumps to more than 21 percent and the sector could be set for further growth if a new bladeless turbine takes off.

Scientists in Spain hope to hugely reduce the cost of wind energy by removing the blades from wind farm turbines, instead of taking advantage of a special phenomenon to cause the turbines to violently shake.

Vortex, a startup from Spain, has developed the tall sticks known as Bladeless, white poles jutting out of the ground, that are built so that they can oscillate. They do so as a result of the way that the wind is whipped up around them, using a phenomenon that architects avoid happening to buildings and encouraging it so that the sticks shake.

"The inspiration from the idea comes from a video I watched in college, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed because of a resonance effect with the wind. The bridge was not made to absorb wind energy but it absorbed so much that it collapsed. I then asked myself, could we build a structure that optimizes this effect and therefore have a new instrument to harness wind energy," said David Yanez, co-founder of Vortex Bladeless.

The design contains no moving parts and floats on magnets to eliminate friction. The makers claim the manufacturing costs will be 53 percent less than regular turbines and 51 percent cheaper to operate.

"The advantages of vortex are fundamentally economic, since the system is so simple, the production and maintenance costs are reduced by at least half. We also believe that our technology can make a significant advance in the eco aspect, as it wouldn't kill any bird or use any lubricants," said Raul Martin, Vortex Bladeless' other co-founder.

There are though still a number of factors to overcome before this project can win over the skeptics and compete in the market place.

Ignacio Cruz, an investigator with the Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology (CIEMAT) under the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, is among those who require further persuading.

"We have yet to see what the productivity for this system is, what is its cost. At first it seems much more competitive than the traditional tech but then we have to equate the possible viability of that system. Essentially how much it produces, how much it costs, and from there we can figure out the cost of energy produced, to see how competitive it can be," said Cruz.

A full sized industrialized turbine is still at least four years away. But a 13-meter, four-kilowatt turbine for domestic use is planned within the next eighteen months.

"In the future we dream of having a product with bigger dimensions that can output around one megawatt, that could compete in the wind energy sector. If what we hope it can do is confirmed, it would compete well with other forms of energy," said Martin.
