House agrees to lift debt ceiling as Democrats spar over shape of broader spending bill
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has told Democrats they need to trim back a $3.5 trillion spending package, but liberals are resisting cuts. The agreement to temporarily lift the debt ceiling buys them more time to negotiate, but it shows the emerging fiscal pressures the party faces as it looks to enact large parts of President Biden's agenda in the coming weeks.
