Bay Area districts debate how to make schools safe during pandemic

Behind the scenes of reopened classrooms, adults are still debating how to keep schools safe amid a pandemic. Each district has adopted its own policy on masking, vaccination, testing, ventilation or more, making for a dizzying array of rules − many of which have led to community outcry.

Los Angeles, the second largest district in the country, has become something of a standout, requiring weekly testing as well as vaccinations for all students and staff − a policy that exceeds health requirements and pressures other districts to follow suit.

Twenty years after Sept. 11, eight politicians reflect how the day shaped their lives

Pete Buttigieg was in his Harvard dorm room. Joni Ernst was planning her toddler's birthday party in their new home in Red Oak, Iowa. Asa Hutchinson was scheduled to board a commercial flight to Washington, D.C. - and ended up on a military jet instead.

Through different vantage points, they saw the same indelible images: the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, the smoldering Pentagon, the crater of wreckage in Shanksville, Pa. They, like much of the nation, can easily summon their memories of Sept. 11, 2001, a collective freeze frame of the moment that seemed to transform everything.

Analysis of the deadly U.S. drone strike’s aftermath in Kabul suggests no evidence the targeted car contained explosives

Following an airstrike in Kabul the U.S. military said targeted militants carrying explosives, The Washington Post provided Pentagon assessments and imagery of the damage caused by the strike to experts, including a physicist and former bomb technicians. Taken together, their assessments suggest there is no evidence the car contained explosives. Ten civilians were killed in the Aug. 29 strike, families said.
