Masayuki Hoshina, known as a master, and Aizu Matsudaira who protects the Shogunate through Masayuki's morals

名君として知られた保科正之と正之の遺訓によって幕府を守る会津松平家

 

During the Sengoku period, Aizu was dominated by Ashina. Date Masamune destroys Ashina and gets Aizu, but is  controled by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

戦国時代、会津は蘆名氏が支配していました。伊達政宗が蘆名氏を滅ぼして会津を手に入れますが、豊臣秀吉に召し上げられます。

 

Instead, Ayuzu was dominated by Gamo-Ujisato. Later, under the control of Mr. Kato, Masayuki Hoshina, the younger brother of the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu, became the lord of “Aizuwakamatsu Castle (Tsuruga Castle)”.

かわって、会津を支配したのが蒲生氏郷でした。その後、加藤氏の支配を経て、3代将軍家光の弟である保科正之が『会津若松城（鶴ヶ城）』の城主となりました。

Since then, it has become the residence of Matsudaira Aizu (name changed from Mr. Hoshina) until the end of the Edo period. Masayuki Hoshina is famous for assisting Ietsuna 家綱, the 4th general shogun.

以来、幕末まで会津藩松平氏（保科氏から改姓）の居城となります。保科正之は家光の子、4代将軍家綱を補佐したことで有名ですね。

It is well-known that Masayuki Hoshina asked him to assist the family when he seemed to die.

家光がなくなる間際、保科正之に家綱の補佐を頼んだことが良く知られています。

Masayuki left the word “Aizu han should be a guardian of the generals” as a family rule, and the fate of Aizu han at the end of the Edo period was also determined.

正之は家訓として「会津藩たるは将軍家を守護すべき存在」という言葉を残したことで、幕末の会津藩の運命も定まりました。

Masayuki is also known for his fair and good politics against the territory.

また、正之は領民に対して公正で善政を施したことでも知られます。

Once, when it ruled Takano in Nagano Prefecture and was transferred to Yamagata, some of the resident of Takato moved to Yamagata with a tribute to Masayuki.

かつて、長野県の高遠を支配し、山形に転封となったときには、高遠の領民の一部が正之をしたって山形に去りました。

Masayuki entered Aizu and cultivated the industry, and founded a company warehouse to save poor farmers during famine. In addition, we will make sure that we are fair when we unify the baskets and scales and collect taxes.

会津に入った正之は産業の育成を図るとともに、飢饉時に貧農を救うための社倉を創設。また、升と秤を統一して税を取り立てるときに公平になるように配慮します。

Aizu Wakamatsu Castle became a battlefield and full of wounds in the Aizu War, which is part of the Boshin War.

During the end of the Edo period from the 1850s to the 1960s, the Aizu lord Matsudaira Katanori always showed movement to support the shogunate.

1850年代から60年代にかけての幕末動乱時、会津藩主松平容保は常に幕府を支える動きを見せます。

会津藩にとって重い負担になったであろう京都守護職就任などそんな役まわりでも引き受けたのは、先祖の保科正之の家訓があったからでした。

しかし、京都警備は会津藩だけでは負担が大きいのも事実。そこで、新撰組を会津藩預かりとして採用し、京都の治安維持に当たらせました。

In 1868, when the Satsuma War started from the battle of Toba Fushimi, Aizu Saga fights with the new shogunate army and new government troops such as Satsuma and Choshu.

1868年、鳥羽伏見の戦いから戊辰戦争が始まると、会津藩は旧幕府軍とともに薩摩・長州などの新政府軍と戦います。

When Tokugawa Yoshinobu decided to open Edo bloodlessly, Aizu Lord Matsudaira Katamori raised Yoshinobu to Aizu.

徳川慶喜が江戸を無血開城すると決めると、会津藩主松平容保は会津に引き上げました。

The new government army that took control of Edo moved the army north to fight the Oou etsu alliance, with Sendai as the leader. The new government troops aimed for Aizuwakamatsu Castle.

江戸を制圧した新政府軍は仙台藩を盟主とする奥羽越列藩同盟と戦うため軍を北上させました。新政府軍が目指したのは『会津若松城』。

On the other hand, Satoshi Aizu tries to make peace with the new government troops, but fails. The Aizu War begins in April 1868.

これに対し、会津藩は新政府軍との和議をこころみますが、失敗。1868年4月に会津戦争が始まります。

“Aizu Wakamatsu Castle” was attacked by a new government army. The Aizu War lasts for a month, and many shells are shot into Aizu Wakamatsu Castle.

『会津若松城』には新政府軍の激しい攻撃が加えられました。会津戦争は1ヶ月に及び、『会津若松城』にも多数の砲弾が打ち込まれます。

After the Aizu clan surrendered, “Aizu Wakamatsu Castle” was under government control.

会津藩降伏後、『会津若松城』は政府の管理下に入りました。

The castle tower damaged by the Aizu War was demolished by 1874. In 1930, Aizuwakamatsu Castle Ruins was designated as a historic site in Fukushima Prefecture.

After the war, preservation and maintenance of “Aizuwakamatsu Castle” will begin. In 1960, Honmaru was restored to its current form.

戦後になると、『会津若松城』の保存・整備が始まります。1960年、本丸が現在の形に復元されました。

Five years later, in 1965, the castle tower made of reinforced concrete was rebuilt. The castle tower is open to the public as the “Wakamatsu Castle castle tower local museum”.

その5年後である1965年、鉄筋コンクリート製の天守閣が再建されました。天守閣は「若松城天守閣郷土博物館」として一般公開されています。

In 1990, the tea house “Rinkaku” was relocated to the original location of Honmaru. In 2001, the Hoshiiyagura 干飯櫓 and Minami Hashiri Nagaya 南走長屋 in Honmarunai were restored.

1990年には茶室「麟閣」が本丸の元の場所に移築復元されました。2001年には本丸内にあった干飯櫓と南走長屋を復元。
