“Shuri Castle” is a castle located in Shuri Kinjo Town, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture.
『首里城』は沖縄県那覇市首里金城町にある城です。
It is called “Gusuku” or “Suku” by Okinawan people, and it is also a symbolic building of Okinawa Prefecture.
沖縄の人たちからは「グスク(御城)」または「スク(城)」と呼ばれ、沖縄県を象徴する建造物でもあります。
* Gusuku is different from the mainland castle.
※グスクは本土にある城とは違う性質をもつ。
By the origin politics "Shuri-jo" is conspicuous as a capital in Ryukyu Kingdom which continued for about 450 years (1429-1879) (capital and palace), and which are Ryukyu king and Shoushi 尚氏 and trade with Japan and China, Ryukyu, the center where personal culture was being built.
『首里城』は約450年続いた琉球王国(1429〜1879)の首府(首都、王宮)として栄え、琉球国王・尚氏のもと政治や日本や中国との貿易で琉球独自の文化を築いていった中心地です。
* Shoushi is divided into the first Shoushi and the second Shoushi.
※尚氏は第一尚氏と第二尚氏に分けられる
By the way, all the buildings of Shuri Castle are facing the west, because they are respectful to the Chinese emperor.
ちなみに、『首里城』の各建造物はすべて西側を向いていますが、これは中国の皇帝に対して敬意を表しているからです。
During the Edo period, the Ryukyu Kingdom was under the control of the Satsuma Domain and became an official part of Japan after the Meiji Restoration.
琉球王国は江戸時代になると薩摩藩の支配下に置かれ、明治維新後に正式に日本の一部になりました。
On the other hand, Shuri Castle was burnt down several times from the Edo period and rebuilt each time, but when it entered the Meiji period, it became a Japanese base, and during the Pacific War, the US army attacked and the building was completely destroyed.
一方、『首里城』は江戸時代から何回か焼失しその都度再建されますが、明治時代に入ると日本軍の基地となり、太平洋戦争時には米軍の攻撃を受け建造物は完全に破壊されてしまいます。
However, when the “Shrine Gate” was rebuilt in 1958, other buildings were rebuilt one after another.
しかし、1958年に「守礼門」が再建されると、他の建造物も次々と再建されていきます。
In 2000, it was registered as a World Heritage site as part of the “ Ryukyu Kingdom Gusuku and Related Heritage Group”.
そして、2000年には「琉球王国のグスク及び関連遺産群」の一部として世界遺産に登録されました。
* The restored buildings and walls are not World Heritage Sites, but the site of the castle is a World Heritage Site.

"Shuri Castle" is currently divided into "free area (entrance)" and "paid area (entrance)", each with different attractions.
『首里城』は現在、「無料区域(入園)」と「有料区域(入城)」に分かれていて、それぞれ見所が違います。
The main structures in the free area are mainly gates such as “Shreimon” 「守礼門」and “Koufukumon”「広福門」. Another highlight is the high stone walls surrounding the castle.
無料区域の主な建造物には「守礼門」や「広福門」といった門が中心となっています。また、城の周りを高い石垣が囲っているのも見所です。
The recommended gate is the “Shureimon”.
おすすめの門は「守礼門」です。
This “Shureimon” is the first restored building in Shuri Castle and has a 2000-yen bill.
この「守礼門」は首里城で1番最初に復元された建造物で、2000円札の絵柄にもなっています。
“Shurei” means “protect the courtesy” and has become a Chinese-style gate.
守礼とは「礼節を守る」という意味で、中国風の門となっています。
The other gates are the first gate “Kangkaimon”, the second gate “Zuisenmon”, and the third gate “Roukokumon”.
他の門としては第一の門「勧会門」・第二の門「瑞泉門」・第三の門「漏刻門」があります。
These gates have the following meanings.
これらの門は以下のような意味があります。
[Kankaimon] ... I mean to welcome messengers from China. Shisa on the left and right is for amulet.
【歓会門】…中国からの使者を歓迎するという意味。左右にいるシーサーは魔除けのため。
[Zuisenmon] ... Zuisen means a well-equipped spring. In front of the gate there is a spring called “Ryuhi”｢龍樋｣.
It was used as drinking water.
【瑞泉門】…瑞泉(ずいせん)とはめでたい泉という意味。門の右手前には｢龍樋｣という湧き水
がある。飲料水として使われていた。
[Roukokumon] ... Roukoku 漏刻(ろうこく) means “water clock” in Chinese. A sundial called “Hikagedai” is placed in front.
【漏刻門】…漏刻(ろうこく)とは中国語で｢水時計｣という意味。正面には｢日影台｣という日時計が置かれている。

In the paid area, there is the main hall of Shuri Castle.
有料区域には、首里城のメインである「正殿」があります。
The last gate to enter the main shrine "Houshinmon"奉神門 (here is a free area), you will see "Una".
正殿へ入る最期の門「奉神門｣(ここは無料区域)をくぐると、そこには「御庭(うなー)」が広がっています。
" Una ''「御庭」 is where various ceremonies were held, and the vermilion road drawn toward the main hall is called ” Ukimichi ''「浮道(うきみち)」, and it is limited to the king and messengers from China. Only those who passed were able to pass.
「御庭」は様々な儀式が行われた所であり、正殿へ向かって引かれている朱色の道は「浮道(うきみち)」と呼ばれていて、国王や中国からの使者など限られた人たちしか通れませんでした。

また、左右にある色違いの列は、儀式の時に諸官らが位順に並んでいました。

現在は、王府の仕組みや冊封儀式などを解説する施設となっていて、2000年に開催された沖縄サミットでは「北殿」が晩餐会に利用されました。
“Minamiden” was once a Japanese-style ritual and is now a museum. "Bansho" is a place where the people who came to Shuri Castle were checked.
「南殿」は、かつては日本風の儀式が行われ現在は資料館となっています。「番所」は首里城へ来た人の取り次ぎをした場所です。
The shape of ”Seiden" is similar to a Chinese palace at a central building in Shuri-jo , and the two-tiered three-story building and the pillars decorated with dragons are unique to Ryukyu, not in Japan or China.
「正殿」は首里城の中心的な建造物で形は中国の宮殿に似ていますが、二層三階建てや柱を龍で装飾しているところは日本や中国になく琉球独自の様式となっています。
