Hakodate opened under the Japan-US-War Parent Treaty. Goryokaku created for the defense of remote areas.

日米和親条約により開港した箱館。蝦夷地防衛の為につくられた五稜郭

 

In 1853, Perry, commander of the US Pacific Fleet, came to Japan on a black boat.

1853年、黒船に乗ってアメリカ太平洋艦隊司令長官のペリーが来日しました。

 

Perry requested the Edo shogunate to open a port, and signed the Japan-US Treaty of Japan-US Friendship in 1854.

ペリーは江戸幕府に開港を要求し、1854年に日米和親条約を締結しました。

 

The national isolation system that the Shogunate has protected for more than 200 years is rotted by this.

これにより、幕府が200年以上にわたって守ってきた鎖国体制が崩壊してしまいます。

 

The Shogunate's opening port site was Shimoda at the tip of the Izu Peninsula and the Hakodate of Ezochi.

In 1868, The Boshin War began, with new government forces mainly Satsuma and Choshu fighting against the old Shogunate forces and the Ouuetsu  Alliance of number of clans.

1868年、薩摩藩や長州藩を中心とする新政府軍と旧幕府軍や奥羽越列藩同盟などが戦った戊辰戦争が始まりました。

 

In Goryokaku, Shimizudani, the new government,  appointed as governor of Hakodate instead of Hakodate  magistrate.

『五稜郭』では箱館奉行にかわり新政府の清水谷公考が箱館府の総督として赴任します。

 

In October 1868, a unit based on the former Shogunate navy led by Takeaki Enomoto 榎本武揚 landed in a remote area.  The unit defeat the guards of Hakodate and enter Goryokaku.

1868年10月、榎本武揚率いる旧幕府海軍を主力とする部隊が蝦夷地に上陸。箱館府の守備兵を打ち破って五稜郭に入城します。

 

The old shogunate forces occupied Matsumae castle and Tate castle and cleaned up the new government army from the Ezochi.

旧幕府軍は松前城・館城を占領し蝦夷地から新政府軍を一掃しました。

In 1869, the new government army sent an army, with its main force at Matsumae-feudal clan and Hirosaki-feudal clan, as a main attraction.

1869年、新政府軍は松前藩・弘前藩を主力とする軍勢を蝦夷地に差し向けます。

 

The new government army who landed in a remote place managed to overthrow the old shogunate army with overwhelming force.

蝦夷地に上陸した新政府軍は圧倒的兵力で旧幕府軍を追い詰めていきました。

 

In May 1869, a new government army who took control of the sea battle of the Hakodate Bay started  firing at the bay towards Goryokaku.

1869年5月、箱館湾の海戦で制海権を握った新政府軍は、湾上から五稜郭に向けて砲撃を開始します。

 

The Armstrong cannon mounted on the new government army's warship "Kotetsu" had a range sufficiently reaching from Hakodate Bay to Goryokaku, so it was bombarded unilaterally.

新政府軍の軍艦「甲鉄」に搭載されたアームストロング砲は箱館湾から五稜郭まで十分に届く射程を持っていたため、一方的に砲撃されてしまいます。

 

On May 18th, the isolated Goryokaku surrenders to the new government army and opens up castle on May 18 when the nearby bases such as Bentendaiba 弁天台場, Shijokaku四稜郭 and Chiyogadaijinya千代ヶ岱陣屋 fall down.

弁天台場や四稜郭、千代ヶ岱陣屋など周辺拠点が陥落し孤立した五稜郭は5月18日、新政府軍に降伏し開城します。

In Hakodate City, the Hakodate Goryokaku Festival is held every May.

開催は5月中旬の土日で、五稜郭が開城した5月18日の前後になることが多いですね。

To access "Gyogo-ku", get on a tram from JR Hakodate Station and get off at the "Gyogokaku Park Front" stop. From there you will arrive in about 10 minutes on foot.

『五稜郭』へのアクセスは、JR函館駅から市電に乗って「五稜郭公園前」の電停で下車。そこから徒歩で10分ほどで到着します。

As "Goryokaku Tower Shuttle Bus" from Hakodate Station is operated every day, I think that you may use it there.

函館駅発着の「五稜郭タワーシャトルバス」が毎日運航されているので、そちらを利用してもいいと思います。

 

The shuttle fee is \ 200 each way.

シャトルバスの料金は片道200円です。

 

Admission to the Goryokaku (in the park) is free, but there is a fee for entering the Hakodate Vocational Office located inside.

『五稜郭』への入場（公園内）は無料ですが、中にある箱館奉行所へは入館料が必要です。

 

It is 500 yen for adults, 250 yen for students, students and children.

大人500円、学生・生徒・児童は250円ですよ。

 

There is a paid parking lot nearby, but due to the limited number, we recommend using public transport.

近隣に有料駐車場はありますが、台数に限りがあるので公共交通機関の利用がおすすめです。
