地名の由来　東京・江戸

日本の地名・地方の名前の由来


１８６８年の明治維新までは「江戸」と呼ばれていたわけですが、

「江戸」とは「入り江」つまり東京湾の戸口だったため「江戸」という説と、

アイヌ語で「突き出たところ」を意味する言葉から来たという説があります。



１８６８年、西の京「京都」に対して“江戸を東の京とする”という詔書が出ました。

しかしこれは、地名を東京とするものではありませんでした。



ところが、それが慣用的に用いられるようになり、

いつの間にか「東京」となってしまいました。

Tokyo Eastern Capital 英語で「東京」・「江戸」を紹介

Until the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the city was known as Edo, a name

which combined the words for “inlet” and “door” to mean something

like “gateway to the bay” .


Another theory suggests that Edo comes from old Ainu word meaning

“place that sticks out" .


In any case, an imperial edict was issued at the time of Meiji Restoration

estanblishing Edo as the new “eastern capital” in contrast to Kyoto,

the ancient capital in the west.


The edict did not officially change the name of the city to Tokyo,

but popular usage soon did.
