Frog and crab
You will get to see many frogs around the house and rice fields. I hear a lot of their songs from April to September. I took a few pictures of them and most are ‘Tonosama Gaeru’ which is Black-spotted Pond Frog. It is about 5-9cm and it won’t hurt you. You do not have to worry about frogs in Japan. There are no frog killing people here.
I see more frogs around near city but in far backcountry, maybe predatory animals like snakes and birds eat them. Since not seeing too many snakes, they are also eaten by wild boars. Finally we eat wild boars. Yes, one of principal products of this district is wild boar meat! And it is branded as ‘Yamizo Shishimaru’. Awesome!
Seeing mountain stream, you will also find ‘Sawa Gani’ which is Japanese freshwater crab. Even in my garden, sometime I find it. Since each crab has territory, you cannot catch many at once, but honestly speaking, it is taste nice. If you wan to cook, you have to cook well‐done not rare to kill parasitic worm just in case. Beer and crab, awesome!
