「元気が無い」「気分が悪い」「不機嫌」
【直訳】
分類の外
【イメージ】
普段、気分を何段階かに「分類 sort」するとしたらだいたいどこかに当てはまる。
しかし、「元気が無い」「気分が悪い」「不機嫌」な状態は通常とは違うので「分類の外 out of sorts」だ。

【例文】

どうしてトムは元気が無いか知ってる？
B:Maybe he failed the exam yesterday.

【イメージ】
現役で仕事をしている期間が「パラシュート parachute」で降りている期間。
地面に着地したらそこからは退職して自由になれるとする。
すると、ただの「パラシュート parachute」では安全に着地できるかどうか不安である。
もし、「黄金 golden」のパラシュートがあれば「完璧に安全に着地出来る事がほぼ確実（高額の退職金が確保されている）」であるイメージです。

「フライパン frying pan」の中にいると熱いので悪い状況である。
なので、そこから脱するために「外に出たら out of」そこに待っていたのはフライパンよりもさらに熱い「炎 fire」だった。
「悪い状況から逃れるために行動 out of the frying pan」したのに「さらに悪い事態に」なってしまった。
「一難去ってまた一難」でもう「踏んだり蹴ったり」だ。
